LITTLEWOODS’ store in Blackburn gave housewives some home truths in this 1956 advert — promising if they spent in shillings that got pounds of value back.
The store, in Church Street, had everything for the home, at a price that was right.
This included contemporary table lamps, with ‘coolie’ shades in a range of different colours and wired complete, for 15/11.
There were also lots of rugs to choose from, in oblongs or half moons, all priced at 32/6.
Plains and striped towels — there was no such selection anywhere else — in a mass of colours, including scarlet, black, gold, pink and green, sold for 4/11 or 6/11.
Snow white sheets were available at 16/11, or up-to-date coloured sheets, in blue, green and pink, cost 18/11.
The housewife could also get scalloped pillowcases to match — colours are fast, fabrics last — for 3/11.
For the dining room, 12-piece tea sets in pink, green, primrose or blue earthenware cost 8s 6d and you could display them on easy-clean plastic tablecloths, priced at 3/11.
