HITLER and the Third Reich were busy building an army on the continent but, here in Britain, it would be another six months before the spectre of war rose over the country.
These young schoolgirls, in Blackburn, in March 1939, were happily taking the applause after their latest stage performance.
The youngsters, of Blakey Moor Girls School, had just presented the operetta Hiawatha.
The photograph has been sent to us by Irene Booth, nee Pickup, who was then 14 years old.
She recalls that the school had an excellent choir, taught and conducted by the music teacher, Miss Simpson, which took part in music festivals throughout East Lancashire.
The choir was also chosen to perform for a broadcast of the BBC radio’s Children’s Hour.
