IN the early 1950s, rockabilly emerged as one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music.

The term is a mixture of ‘rock,’ from rock and roll, and ‘hillbilly’ from the country music that contributed strongly to the style’s development.

Rockabilly was also influenced by swing, blues and boogie woogie and was most popular until the early 1960’s.

Rockabilly fashion is still huge – it’s fun, wearable and perfect for slim or curvy figures.

Originally the look was full skirt dresses with lots of underskirts, flat pumps, teased hair, bright red lipstick, bold prints and bright accessories.

Novelty prints also made a huge splash and that is something that has really carried through to today’s rockabilly style.

You can dress rockabilly with original vintage, brand new retro or a combination of both. Some pointers for your basics include: n High waists – namely pencil skirts or capri length trousers.

n Leopard print anything!

n Tattoo inspired necklaces i.e. swallows, roses, cherries, hearts.

n Halterneck tops and dresses.

n Full circle skirts/dresses and netted petticoats for full SWING.

n Gingham, houndstooth and denim.

n Red lipstck, a slick of eyeliner and a sense of fun!
