WATTIE Dick, a star player at Accrington Stanley before the club folded, has died at the age of 85.

Peter Watt Dick, known by his nickname of Wattie, made 125 appearances for Stanley between 1955 and 1958 during their days in Division Three and Division Three North.

Born in Newmains just outside Glasgow, he was one of several Scottish players brought to Stanley by compatriot Walter Galbraith, still regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever managers.

The inside forward arrived from Third Lanark in 1955 and scored 37 goals in three years with Stanley.

He played at Peel Park in a period when Stanley finished in the top three of Third Division North for four seasons in succession under Galbraith – still their highest ever league finishes.

They narrowly missed out on promotion though and Galbraith left for Bradford Park Avenue in 1958. Dick soon followed Galbraith to the Yorkshire club in a £2,750 joint deal along with Ray Byrom – grandfather of former Stanley midfielder Joel Byrom, who currently plays for Preston.

Stanley were forced to resign from the Football League in 1962.
