WELSH starlet Adam Henley insists Blackburn Rovers will fight for their Premier League future “to the end” as he looks to help the Ewood Park outfit complete an historic Manchester double.
Rovers face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City on Saturday but, having already been victorious at Old Trafford this season, Henley believes another Premier League upset is within their capabilities.
The last time Rovers won league games at Manchester City and Manchester United in the same season was under Jack Marshall’s management in 1962, with Henley admitting a repeat would be a remarkable achievement.
But, having already been involved in a draw at Anfield and the 3-2 victory at Manchester United in his debut senior season, the 17-year-old has his sights set on ending City’s 100 per cent league record at the Etihad Stadium.
Henley said: “Everyone wrote us off at Old Trafford. Sometimes you like to be underdogs and if we go there with the right attitude we have every chance. As long as you go and put yourself about, you always have a chance.
“I don’t know if it would ever happen again (winning at Manchester City and Manchester United). But obviously it is something we want to achieve.
“All I can do is do what I am asked to do. I would love to play some more games but it is down to the manager at the end of the day.
If he feels I am capable of doing it then I am very happy to of course.”
“You want to put yourself up against the best players and that is what you are in the game for. Hopefully I get a chance.”
Rovers travel to big-spending Manchester City out of the relegation zone on goal difference as the battle for the drop continues to loom large for at least five clubs.
Henley featured in the 3-2 home win over relegation rivals QPR a little more than a week ago and, with Jason Lowe and Gael Givet suspended for Saturday’s trip, could enjoy more Premier League action this weekend.
“The team was together in the win at Old Trafford and the draw against Liverpool, similar to QPR the other weekend,” he told Roversplayer. “When the whole team comes together, everyone does their bit and we put on a performance, we have shown we can beat the best of teams. It is just that consistency we need. That is going to be so important to keep us up at the end of the season.
“It was great to get the three points against QPR. It was so desperately needed and now we need to kick on and get more results like that.
“It was massive. The Arsenal game brought us down to earth but the performance against QPR shows the spirit and shows we are not down and out. We want to fight until the end.
“It was effort all around the pitch. Everyone wanted to give the best they had and all that came together against QPR. If we can bring that into the games for the rest of the season then I think we will have no problems.
“It is consistency that is the key. More performances like that will stand us in good stead.”
Henley was yesterday named in the Welsh under 21 squad for the UEFA qualifier against Andorra on February 29 having also been named as a standby for the senior squad’s game against Costa Rica on the same evening.
Meanwhile Rovers due David Goodwillie and Grant Hanley have been included in Scotland’s squad to face Slovenia in Koper on February 29.
