BLACKBURN Rovers star Martin Olsson scored his fourth goal in five appearances for Sweden to help his side secure second place in Group E.
Olsson turned home from close range in the 52nd minute of Sweden’s 2-1 win in Finland to strengthen his chances of appearing at Euro 2012.
Sweden will finish second in the group behind the Netherlands and will at least be involved in next month’s play-offs, although they also remain in contention to qualify automatically for next year’s finals as the best runners up.
Olsson, who completed the 90 minutes last night, also netted for Sweden in San Marino last month. He previously scored twice on his national team debut against Bosnia last year.
Simon Vukcevic featured for Montenegro in their 2-2 draw against England, for whom former Rovers defender Phil Jones made his senior international debut.
Radosav Petrovic came on as a substitute in Serbia’s home qualifier against Italy, while David Goodwillie and Grant Hanley will hope to be involved when Scotland face Liechtenstein in Vaduz at 6.30pm tomorrow.
Jason Lowe was an unused substitute in the England under 21s team’s 3-0 win in Iceland, while John O’Sullivan captained the Republic of Ireland under 19s side to a 4-1 win in Bulgaria.
Fellow Rovers midfielder James Knowles suffered disappointment, though, as Northern Ireland’s under 19s team were beaten 5-1 by Germany in Belfast.
