MICHEL Salgado has urged Blackburn Rovers owners to forget the superstars and instead focus on building for the long-term at Ewood Park.
After Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup third round win over Queens Park Rangers, boss Steve Kean conceded defeat in the race to land Ronaldinho – just a day after admitting failure in efforts to bring David Beckham to Rovers.
Since Indian poultry firm Venky’s bought the club, Rovers have hit the headlines worldwide but two-times Champions League winner Salgado believes a lower-profile transfer policy is the way to go.
He said: “I know Beckham and Ronaldinho are big names for Blackburn. But I don’t think someone like Beckham coming here for three months is the best thing for him or Blackburn.
“We’d prefer three or four club players with good experience. Maybe not top class but ones who would be really good for this club in the future.
“So maybe instead we need three or four players with experience, with quality rather than signing Beckham or Ronaldinho.
“Maybe Ronaldinho wouldn’t be in the mood to play here in England with the weather and those things. You have to be honest.
“He would be a big name for us, maybe around the world they will talk about us a bit more now. But on the pitch I would prefer a good team, playing well and getting results.”
Kean has already indicated his search for a big-name signing this month is now at an end as he steps up his efforts to add to Rovers’ injury-ravaged squad.
And Salgado, who spoke to his friend and former Real Madrid team mate Beckham about his future, believes his manager is right in focusing on building a platform for the future with less glamorous names.
“If you can mix everything, it’s perfect,” said Salgado. “If you can sign Ronaldinho and then sign three good team or club players, it would be a great mix for us.
“It’s great that the name of Blackburn is known around the world, but if you sign Ronaldinho I don’t think you’ll have enough money to sign another three players.
“It’s a question for the owners. They’re trying to do the best. But I think the best thing is to keep the important players we have. That’s the main thing the owners have to think about.
“After that, if it’s possible to sign a top name then great, but we have to sign three new faces to build something important for the club.
“If you can do both it’s great. If you can do only one thing , it’s better to sign three players to build a great team.”
Hoilett’s winner on Saturday leaves Rovers with three wins out of their last four games and Salgado believes things are finally starting to settle down.
He was quick to thank former boss Sam Allardyce for all he did for the club but knows everyone needs to unite behind the new regime.
He said: “We have been through a lot of changes in the last month. In the home games against West Ham and Stoke we were a little nervous. Maybe we were a little bit lost.
“All the changes, the takeover, the manager, Sam out. Now we are settling a bit. We have to be together for the new manager.
“We need to say thank you to Sam, he did a great job here. But we are professionals, we have to understand the situation.
“We have to respect the new owners decisions and back them.”
