A goal two minutes into injury time earned Town their second win in three days on Tuesday night.

But who scored the winner is a topic for debate among the Town faithful.

With both sides pressing for a winner Town were awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal.

Substitute Stewart Airdrie took the kick and his shot hit the bar, bounced down and hit Paul Eatock.

What happened next is open to some conjecture.

The referee said that Airdrie's free kick went over the line after it hit Eatock on the back.

Fans behind the goal say the ball spun away from the line and Williams following up scored the winning goal for Barnoldswick.

Town were relieved to have won because on the balance of play a draw would have been a fair result..

Like on Saturday, Airdire made a decisive impact on the game after replacing Robert Grimes in the 68th minute.

Four minutes after going on he had a curling shot kicked off the line, then crossed for Paul Barrett to head just wide.

St Helens Town 0 Barnoldswick Town 3

Town registered their first Vodkat North West Counties Premier Division win when they triumphed at an eerily quiet Knowsley Road.

The first half was evenly contested although defender Bill Williams twice foiled promising attacks.

Then right on 45 minutes a weak back pass by the St Helens fullback Hatton fell short of goalkeeper New-brook, Paul Barrett pouncing on the ball and scoring.

A double substitution proved crucial for Town as Stewart Airdrie and Liam Blades were introduced after 70 minutes.

In the 79th minute Town skipper Russell Clark picked the ball up just inside the St Helens half and saw an opportunity to move forward.

His run ended up almost by the corner flag, but he was able to move the ball back into the path of Clough whose cross was volleyed home by Airdrie.

The subsitutute made the game safe when he chested a cross down just inside the penalty area, moved forward and easily slotted the home his second goal.
