Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley felt Rovers had ‘the luxury’ of making changes over the festive period – which made his side’s turnaround all the more impressive.

Rovers led through Danny Graham’s seventh minute header, but for the first time in two-and-a-half years, the Terriers came from behind to win thanks to a Jon Goran Stankovic header and Steve Mounie thunderbolt.

Tony Mowbray made five changes for the game, but three of those were enforced, with Ryan Nyambe, Derrick Williams all ruled out through injury.

Rovers had previously made five changes for the visit of Birmingham City, six against Wigan Athletic, and seven against Bristol City on December 14, something Cowley says he hasn’t been able to do because the size of his squad.

But he said that only added to the pride in his players as they responded from a Boxing Day defeat at Middlesbrough to end Rovers’ unbeaten run at eight matches.

He said: “You have to respect Blackburn have made lots of changes recently and we haven’t had the luxury of doing that.

“With respect to people like Juninho Bacuna he is used to playing in Holland with a 32 game season, which is a big difference. A few of them might have felt sorry for themselves but we reminded them there’s worse jobs in life and credit to them.

“We had a terrible start the first 10 minutes and just didn't get to our levels. It was flat, we didn't play with energy or intensity, didn't play to the gameplan, then you concede and it can be very difficult.

"So credit to the players. I thought they showed a lot of resilience, a lot of grit, to fight their way back into the game.

“When you go a goal down after ten minutes and you're really young you can easily go under, and they didn't. You know what, I'm really proud of them.”

Mounie’s 25-yard strike was the stand-out moment in the game, but midfielder Lewis O’Brien’s role was praised by his manager, intercepting Elliott Bennett’s square pass which gave the striker the opportunity to shoot.

He said: "I have to say Lewis O'Brien in the build-up,  unbelievable pressure on the ball to get a turnover. Steve will rightly and deservedly get the headlines but the goal doesn't happen without Lewis's endeavour and selflessness.

“Steve only had one thought in his mind and managed to bend it in the top corner. It's certainly a good feeling."

“It's a hell of a finish and it felt really good to me.

"They were all singing Stevie's name in the changing rooms after and I think he was singing his own name! It was a good moment.”
