Tony Mowbray has hinted Rovers’ solution to Bradley Dack’s injury may have to come from within unless money can be created from departures next month.

Mowbray confirmed that top scorer Dack will miss the remainder of the season, and beyond, after scans revealed damage to his anterior cruciate ligament when stretchered off in Monday’s goalless draw with Wigan.

The 1-1 draw with Birmingham City on Boxing Day was just the second game this season that 10-goal attacker Dack hasn’t started, with Rovers missing his creativity after taking just two points from back-to-back home games.

Rovers weren’t initially on the look-out for an attacker when the transfer window re-opens next month, but news of Dack’s injury may now change those plans if players can be offloaded to free up funds.

“If there is some wheeling and dealing to be done, we’re not sat here with loads of cash to go and buy another big name No.10,” the manager said.

“Let’s see if someone leaves and we can create some space in the budget.

“If that happens then maybe we will sign someone.

“If not then there’s the likes of Holtby, Rothwell, Buckley, Brereton, Samuel, they have to step up alongside the likes of Gallagher and Graham and help us.”

Dack’s ever-present run in the side ended in the win at Bristol City earlier this month, having been suspended following his red card at Swansea City.

There Mowbray made six changes and also switched to a 4-4-2 formation in his absence.

Rovers went with that same system against Birmingham City, with goalscorer Adam Armstrong partnering Sam Gallagher in attack.

While Mowbray admits Rovers do have players who can operate in Dack’s favoured No.10 role, whether they can replicate his goal output, and consistent performances, remains to be seen, with Armstrong’s penalty taking him still four short of Dack’s tally of 10.

Asked if a possible switch in formation, from his usual 4-2-3-1 could be a possibility, Mowbray added: “I think so. Different days, different games.

“Holtby can play then there and spin with the ball away from people.

“Buckley scored two goals at Newcastle for the Under-23s and could have had four or five by all accounts.

“Joe Rothwell can he do it? We’ll have to see. Ben Brereton? We’ll have to see.

“We have to work on it in training but it’s difficult to do anything in training at the minute because you’re always recovering.

“We’ll try and find the right formula at the top end of the pitch.”

Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley has offered a message to support to Rovers attacker Bradley Dack after scans revealed damage to his anterior cruciate ligament injury will rule him out for up to a year.

Rovers travel to the John Smith’s Stadium tomorrow afternoon bidding to extend their unbeaten run to nine games, but will have to do without their 10-goal top scorer.

“Bradley Dack is a boy we know well, he lives just around the corner from us, and he is a good kid and a really good player,” Cowley said.

“First and foremost we wish him well because it’s a nasty injury and you never want to see that.”

Huddersfield have injury problems of their own heading in to the game, with Tommy Elphick (knee), Alex Pritchard (knee), Fraizer Campbell (hip) and Collin Quaner (hip) all unavailable for the Boxing Day defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Terriers also lost influential midfielder Jonathan Hogg to injury at the Riverside and he is a doubt for the visit of Rovers.
