BURNLEY could be writing one of the Premier League’s great stories this season, according to Chris Wood.
The Clarets can take a giant step towards European qualification with victory over Leicester City at Turf Moor on Saturday, making a mockery of pre-season predictions of struggle.
It might not be a Hollywood script to compare with the Foxes’ own astonishing title success two years ago, but Burnley are still looking for the perfect ending to a remarkable story in its own right.
With six games to go the Clarets are sitting pretty in seventh, six points clear of Leicester.
With their current league position almost certain to seal Europa League qualification - unless Southampton lift the FA Cup - Burnley can land a knockout blow this weekend against Claude Puel’s men.
Before the season began most people would have expected the Clarets to have plenty to play for come April - but in the battle against the drop rather than the fight for continental qualification.
Asked how good a story Burnley finishing seventh would be, Wood said: “It would have to be up there.
“We were one of the favourites to go down at the start of the season and this group of lads have shown that we’re a lot better than what they say.
“If that happens, it’s a long way off and it’s a big ‘if’, it would be up there.
“At the moment we’re not thinking about that (Europe). At the end of the season, if it comes, then we can talk about it. For now it’s all about playing games.”
Going into this weekend Burnley are closer to Arsenal in fifth (five points behind) than Leicester are to the Clarets.
But Wood is seeking to keep talk of Europe under wraps for now.
“We’ve still got Leicester City to play, we’ve still got Arsenal to play, we’ve still got a lot of other teams to play,” the New Zealand striker said.
“It’s going to be difficult so we’re just going to take it game by game and see where it goes.
“It’s another target to tick off. It’s still a long way off now, there’s still a long time to go. We’ve just got to keep knuckling down and working hard.”
Wood will face one of his former clubs this weekend, having spent two-and-a-half-years at the King Power Stadium before departing for Leeds United ahead of Leicester’s title-winning campaign.
Having spent time at nine different clubs in England, including six loan spells, the 26-year-old joked the Foxes were ‘one of many’ of his former sides.
He added: “It’ll be nice to face them and it would be nice to pick up three points against them.
“It’s just another game to us. It’s no different at all. It’s just a game.”
