SOPHIE Hitchon has crashed out of the European Athletics Championships in Switzerland.
The Burnley hammer thrower needed to better 69.50m to guarantee her spot in the final or to finish in the top 12.
But the 23-year-old could manage only 62.93m with her first effort and then failed to register a distance with her next two throws meaning she dropped out.
Hitchon, who won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games last month, has a personal best of 72.97m and a season’s best of 71.53m – both distances which would have seen her comfortably qualify with Nikola Lomnicka sealing the last spot in Friday night’s final with a distance of 67.18m.
The Blackburn Harrier ended the competition in 19th place.
