DAVID Edgar hopes his goal against Cardiff will earn him a return to the Burnley starting line-up – after admitting his versatility may have previously stopped him holding down a regular place.
Edgar netted a late equaliser as the Clarets rescued a 1-1 draw at home to champions Cardiff on Saturday, having emerged from the bench as a half-time substitute for Junior Stanislas.
The Canadian international has not started a match since Burnley's home loss to Hull in mid-March and thinks his ability to play in a number of positions has sometimes harmed his chances of a regular run in the side.
The 25-year-old featured in midfield against Cardiff and hopes he will now be handed a start for the weekend trip to Wolves – in whatever position he is required.
“Sometimes it’s a curse being able to play everywhere,” Edgar admitted.
“But right now it's about the team and sticking together and whether I'm playing left back, right back or up front it doesn't matter as long as we get the points we need and we stay up that's the main thing for Burnley.
“You want to be playing week in week out but I had to bide my time.
“I've had bit parts here and there with different positions but I've been training really hard and training quite well, and the manager was telling me that I was doing well.
“I knew if I got a chance I had to take it. Hopefully I did enough in that 45 minutes to be in his mind for the next game.
“I love playing in midfield. It’s no secret.
“It was good just to get on and do a job for the team.”
Edgar now wants to complete a fortnight to remember – by securing Burnley’s safety before jetting back to Canada to become a father for the first time.
The Clarets sit four points above the relegation zone with two matches remaining and Edgar is determined to help guarantee Burnley’s survival, before his first child arrive in a couple of weeks.
He will have to fly halfway around the world for the birth, with his fiancee currently back in his native Canada, before also representing his country in the Gold Cup this summer.
“Getting six points is the main focus right now to put all the worrying to bed,” he said.
“Then I’ve got the CONCACAF Gold Cup so that should be good. We got drawn in a group with Mexico, Panama and Martinique.
“We’ve got a friendly against Costa Rica as well so it will be a busy summer.
“I should get a break but I’m having a baby soon, so not much of a break there!
“The baby’s due in a couple of weeks.
“My fiancee is back home, she’s worrying a little bit but I’ll be back for the birth so it's not a problem.
“It's a massive couple of weeks for me.”
Cardiff were able to celebrate winning the Championship title at Turf Moor and Edgar says Burnley must use that as motivation to be in contention at the right end of the table next season.
“It’s the first time I’ve been involved in a game where a team’s gone and won something at our place,” he said.
“It didn’t take away from the fact we got the point we needed, but long-term goals that’s what everyone wants – to be up there.
“That’s where everyone wants to be. Every player in the Championship wants to be in a championship winning side and to get promotion.”
