A MOSAIC of Jimi Hendrix by Darwen artist Ed Chapman raised £23,000 for Cancer Research UK at an auction last night.
The piece, made from 5,000 plectrums, was the centrepiece of the fifth annual Sound and Vision fundraising event at the Abbey Road Studios, London.
The guide price had been between £12,000 and £16,000.
Event compere Al Murray bid for the unique portrait, but lost out to an unknown mystery bidder.
Ed Chapman, 39, said: “I’m delighted that something I enjoyed creating has raised so much for such a worthwhile cause.
“It’s more than we’d hoped for and although it’s nice for the person who’s bought it, it’s really, really good for a charity which works to stop a disease that sadly touches everyone.”
The event overall raised £340,000.
