A CLAYTON-le-Moors mum was stunned when a bottle of vodka bought from Asda turned out to contain only water.
Asda’s Accrington store is said to have had several complaints from other customers about the same problem with Smirnoff Vodka.
Store bosses said they did not understand how the problem could have occurred and have referred the matter to suppliers Diageo, the firm which makes Smirnoff.
Angela Fielding, 52, said she bought the bottle on a Friday night to enjoy with her husband Graham.
The mum-of-four has since been given a £20 voucher by Smirnoff to cover the cost of the bottle, but said she still not had been told how the mix-up happened.
As requested, Angela returned the bottle to Diageo through Asda for the contents to be tested, but the bottle was smashed in-transit.
She said: “I felt foolish bringing the bottle back and saying that there was only water in it, but when I got to the store I heard that other people had had the same problem.
"I’d like it explained to me what exactly happened.”
Firm Diageo said it was aware of a number of complaints which had been passed to them by Accrington’s Asda store.
Bosses said they were still investigating what happened.
A spokeswoman said: “We take all complaints very seriously and are in communication with both Asda and the consumer concerned about the matter.”
A spokeswoman for Asda said “We’re investigating the matter with our suppliers”.
