PEOPLE living in Nelson will have to do without their main post office for over a month.
The post office in Victory Centre is to close today after the current franchise holder decided to end their contract.
A newly-appointed submaster has been found to take over, but the current Victory Centre premises will be unavailable.
Bosses at the Post Office are now holding a consultation with local residents over plans to run the branch from part of the former Woolworth store, in Place De Creil and extend the opening hours.
Andy Wright, field change adviser, said: “This relocation would help to safeguard our presence in the community in the longer term, as well as providing a number of customer benefits.
“The new branch would have a purpose-built serving counter and have level access through double automatic doors to assist customers with mobility difficulties.
“Opening hours would be extended to include Saturday afternoons and the same range of Post Office products and services would be available.”
While the branch is closed, customers are advised to use nearby Post Offices.
These are: Parkfield Post Office in Railway Street; Belle Vue Post Office in Leeds Road; Barrowford Post Office in Gisburn Road; or Brierfield Post Office in Colne Road.
A final decision on the proposal will be announced soon after the consultation period ends on June 22.
