TRAFFIC wardens in Blackburn and Darwen have been given mopeds to ride around the borough..

Council bosses said the move would allow them to tackle ‘yellow line abusers’ in communities around the borough, rather than just the town centre.

But opponents have branded the move “crazy”.

The council has purchased two £1,800 Piaggio Fly 125cc mopeds in a trail run, and is considering adding more to the fleet.

Bosses said the bikes, which will be used in out of town areas, were requested by the police and schools to crack down on nuisance parking.

It has heralded the move as “a major advance in responsiveness” - but opponents have questioned the total cost of the operation - about £8,500 - and said the money could be better spent.

So far, six traffic wardens have been given basic motorbike training, at a cost of £570, which means they have to use L plates and cannot travel faster than 30mph.

They will eventually sit their test, which could cost another £1,500 with three-day courses priced at about £250 each.

Labour leader Kate Hollern said: “You don’t just need to buy the bikes. You need to insure them, train the people using them and pay tax.

“I don’t think it’s necessary and it’s never been mentioned to me before.

“It’s another crazy idea and not a good use of resources.”

Parking ticket campaigner Barrie Segal added: “This is clearly a way of earning more money from parking tickets.

“It will cause frustration because if you see a parking attendant giving you a ticket you want to speak to them, but these guys will just buzz off on their moped to the next one.

“I don’t think it’s necessary and it’s one of those things that give parking enforcement a bad name.”

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: "These new mopeds will be invaluable in dealing with 'yellow line' abusers in areas outside the town centre where frequent obstructions are taking place, particularly around schools.

“It will give us mobility to deal with the whole borough, rather than just concentrating on the town centre. The regional shopping centres, where parking restrictions are generally ignored, will also now come under the control of the civil enforcement officers."

How long before the LT prints a photograph of a moped, illegally parked on double yellow lines with the statement from the council "he was allowed to park there whilst carrying out his duties".?

Well its nice to see Blackburn getting into this century piece by piece, but they should have gone further and purchased electric powered scooters.

traffic wardens are much use as a choclate teapot. what a waste of tax payers money. I hope Jack Straw steps and stop it, cause it just a waste of time and money if he can can sack them, then that would make the community better place. and put the money aside what would pay for a traffic warden to more use like fire rescure, police & medics. etc. Time wake up.

Its a good idea the traffic wardens can move further away from town centres where there many yellow line abusers in many areas of Blackburn where foot patrols is often not possible to reach in due timescales during peakours, well done Blackburn Council.

Tax payers money! if it was congested in the town centre and there was nowhere for you to park, you wouldnt be happy!!they cannot win no matter what they do, i totally agree with the mopeds they are cheap on fuel, and better for the environment, better than a car or 4x4's. If they are using them to cover schools, when parents park on zig zags, this is a good thing it would stop a child from getting knocked down due to lack of visibility. If the muppits who break the traffic law get fined then its their own fault, keep up the good work!!!

I agree too, give them mopeds, then they can escape from the likes of the muppet in the white mitshubishi that mounted the pavement and proceeded to run into the back of a warden.

It was inevitable but strong rumours are floating around that photographs already exist of illegally parked mopeds in Darwen’s underground car parks. Watch this space.

A good idea and about time too. Some of the parking around Sunnyhurst is positively dangerous. Come down Sunnyhurst Lane near Owlett Hall Road (ex Councillor David Smith will have seen this for years!!)
Around schools, taxis parked on zig-zag lines waiting for kids to come out of school. When I was taught to drive I was told to treat "hatched lines" like a brick wall" There would be some badly bruised cars if the hatched lines acted as such!!
