A woman is to be sentenced for the unlawful killing of another woman at a property in Church.

Janet Connor, 52, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Zoe Crowther last month but continued to deny murder.

The prosecution in the case originally sought to try Connor, of Walmsley Close, Church, over murder and she appeared at Preston Crown Court for the first day of her trial today (July 14).

Mr FitzGibbon said the plea was accepted as both parties agreed Connor had suffered from a "severe mental illness" which was "operative at the time of the killing."

Judge Graham Knowles said: "Her symptoms at the time prevented her ability to exercise self-control.

"That does not mean it's the only explanation, and it certainly doesn't mean she doesn't bear the responsibility."

Judge Knowles remanded Connor back into custody to be sentenced on September 12.

Ms Crowther's body was found at a flat in Walmsley Close on January 14 after police were called to a concern for welfare.

A previous hearing at Blackburn Magistrates' court heard she died as a result of multiple stab wounds and that she also suffered defence wounds.

Her family said in a tribute: “Mum was a kind-hearted, loving and selfless woman.

"She was a loved mum, grandma, sister and auntie. She will forever be missed."
