It was facelift time for one of Blackburn’s most easily recognisable landmarks when this picture was taken in 1991.

Lancashire Telegraph: Larkhill flats, 1991

The flats at Larkhill were covered in scaffolding and netting - no mean feat in itself - to allow new fire doors to be installed and for renovation work to be carried out.

Work had started on the three blocks - Bowland House, Ribble House and Pendle House - in 1963 and all three were fully occupied some two years later as families moved from the traditional terraces which were steadily being demolished.

Two of the blocks would be demolished in 2001 but Bowland House remains having undergone a major modernisation programme carried out by Great Places Housing in 2022.
