New food hygiene ratings have been awarded to five venues in Blackburn with Darwen, the Food Standards Agency’s website shows.

Examining hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and the management of food safety, inspectors have rated two businesses a four out of five food hygiene rating, one a three out of five food hygiene rating, and two received a worrying score of one.

After inspections, businesses are given a rating from zero to five, with five the highest and lower scores showing major or urgent improvement is necessary.

Lancashire Telegraph: San MarinoSan Marino (Image: Google Maps)The first business to get a new score was the San Marino Bar Restaurant in Belmont Road, Belmont, which was handed a four-out-of-five rating after assessment on September 26.

The eateries inspection report states both the hygienic food handling and the management of food safety are good whilst the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building is generally satisfactory.

Second up was Nanny Clark's Kitchen, at The Old Co-op Bakery in Borough Road, Darwen was handed a four-out-of-five rating after assessment on September 12.

The inspection report states both the hygienic food handling, and the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building are good whilst the management of food safety at the cafe is generally satisfactory.

Lancashire Telegraph: Geek RetreatGeek Retreat (Image: Google Maps)Next, handed a new three-out-of-five food hygiene rating was Geek Retreat in Church Street, Blackburn, which was given the score after assessment on September 17, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The eateries inspection report states the eatery is generally satisfactory in all areas including the hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and the management of food safety.

The two venues to score one out of five after an inspection were both takeaways. Naafiah Takeaway in Audley Range was given the score after an inspection on September 26, while Megabite in Accrington Road, Blackburn, was handed the low score on September 12.

It means that of Blackburn with Darwen's 176 restaurants, cafes, and canteens with ratings, 126 (72 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.
