Police said a body found in Rishton on Friday is believed to be that of missing Joanne Nield.
Officers were called to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, off Hermitage Street, at just after 1.30pm to reports a body had been found in the water.
A police spokesperson said: “Police attended the scene and sadly found the body of a woman.
"Although no formal identification has yet taken place, we at this stage believe the body could be that of missing woman Joanne Nield. Joanne, 50, was last seen on Tuesday, March 14 in Accrington.
“Her family have been informed of the development and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“Enquiries are continuing and we will update you when we can.”
Five police cars and two vans, underwater search teams and the ambulance service were spotted close to Rishton Paper Mill on Blackburn Road.
Police had launched an appeal to find Joanne in March who was last seen busking outside Tesco in Accrington.
She was said to also have links to Blackburn, Darwen, Clitheroe, and Burnley.
