There are long delays on traffic heading up towards Carlisle following a lorry fire.
The incident happened this morning and the northbound carriageway was closed. Traffic on the southbound carriageway was also stopped so emergency crews could tackle the blaze.
Traffic has been released past the incident but there are long queues of traffic on approach.
North west Highways said: “Traffic caught within the closure of the M6 northbound between junction 41 (Catterlen Interchange) and junction 42 (Carlisle) is now being released past the scene of the vehicle fire in lane three. It may take you some time to get moving.
“Thank you for your patience this afternoon.”
