High school pupils have been learning about politics through a live video call from the Houses of Parliament.
Year 7 pupils at Oakhill School in Whalley, Lancashire, had a lesson out of the ordinary this week with the UK Parliament Education Service who live-streamed an interactive chat with them via video call from the Houses of Parliament in London.
Fiona Green from the UK Parliament Education Service led the session and talked them through the fundamentals of democracy and the important role of the Houses of Parliament.
The session wrapped up with a surprise visit from The Right Honourable Nigel Evans MP, Deputy Speaker and MP for Ribble Valley.
Mr Evans spoke to the pupils for half an hour from the heart of the Palace of Westminster.
He encouraged questions from the pupils and made democracy real and relevant to their everyday lives.
This latest initiative is just the latest in an exciting calendar of alternative lessons for pupils of Oakhill School carefully curated to give them a wide understanding not only of the national curriculum but of topics that will vary and enrich their knowledge further.
Headteacher Jane Buttery said: “Huge thanks to the Deputy Speaker and to Fiona for being so generous with their time, the pupils were enthralled and so very engaged.
“I am tremendously proud of our pupils when they embrace opportunities like this, in and out of the classroom.”
