The M65 was closed after a transit van burst into flames.
The incident happened westbound between junctions 2 and 1 on Wednesday evening (December 21) near Walton Summit Centre.
Footage filmed nearby showed large plumes of smoke and huge flames engulfing the vehicle.
Traffic was moving on the carriageway opposite but later vehicles were brought to a standstill as emergency services tackled the fire.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines from Bamber Bridge and Chorley attended.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire and were on scene for approximately one hour.
