A MAN'S body has been discovered at a railway station by a shocked commuter as he got off a train on his way to work.
A section of Accrington railway station was cordoned off after the body of a man, believed to be in his 50s, was found wedged between a perimeter fence and a low wall.
Police said the gruesome find was made by a man as he got off the Colne to Blackpool North train at 8.14am.
Forensic officers spent the day searching the area for clues about what happened but said the death, although unexaplined, was not believed to be suspicious.
The dead man is believed to be of Polish origin and had been living in the Willows Lane area of the town.
Police believe his body had been lying close to the Blackburn-bound platform overnight.
The remainder of the station remained open while officers conducted their investigations.
British Transport Police are reviewing train station CCTV footage to establish what happened to the man.
Spokesman Jon Radcliffe said: "We were informed by Lancashire Police that a body had been found.
"If the body had been in full view then maybe we would have considered closing the train station but that wasn't the case so the service wasn't affected.
"The deceased is believed to be a man in his 50s but formal identification has not yet taken place and next of kin are still being traced.
"Officers will be looking at CCTV, making local inquiries and liaising with colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary in an attempt to ascertain the movements of the deceased the previous evening.
"At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious."
One commuter, who asked not to be named, said: "I was on my way to work in Cannon Street when I saw police at the scene.
"They removed a body from the back of the train station at around lunchtime.
"The car park on Eagle Street was closed and the area taped off.
"Police dressed in their white suits were at the scene. I wouldn't have liked to be the person who found the body."
A post mortem examination was expected to take place tomorrow.
Commuters at the train station spoke of their shock.
Sylvia Fish, 67, of Brunswick Terrace, said: "This is not the first time this has happened.
About 12 to 18 months ago they found one body in a shelter on the train station."
Commuter Katie Wright, 30, from Oswaldtwistle, said: "The train station isn't that well lit and it's quite dark in places.
"Travelling alone makes you worry about commuting.
"To find a body lying at the train station is shocking but unfortunately is a sign of the times."
