Weather forecasters say the third storm of the season could hit parts of the UK after Christmas, bringing unsettled conditions and heavy snow if the weather pressure system is just right.

According to some meteorologists, ‘storm Corrie’ could hit the UK from December 27 and bring unsettled conditions to the final days of 2021.

Speaking to The Sun, British Weather Services meteorologist Jim Dale, said: "We are expecting one more major storm this month which will set the trend for coming months.

"We expect five to six storms to hit through the winter period which could be severe enough to warrant naming."

Netweather.tv also predict a “colder than average” Christmas period – especially in the north.

A spokesperson said: “There has been a change in the outlook, as the scenario of the high pressure moving towards Greenland now looks very likely to happen, rather than being just a slight possibility, resulting in generally below-average temperatures and potential for some snowfall.

“From 27 December snow is likely, especially but not exclusively on high ground, on the northern flank of these frontal systems.”

What is the Met Office verdict on storm Corrie?

While some forecasters predict a storm at the start of next week – not every meteorological office agrees that conditions will be stormy, but says they could be wintry.

The Met Office say the 26th-4 January remains “somewhat uncertain in detail”.

They said: “Snow showers are looking to continue across far northern areas, with perhaps some mainly light rain or snow for southern locations.

“To the north more settled conditions with brighter spells and perhaps some frost or ice.

“Feeling very cold in brisk northeasterly winds for many. Along the boundary, potential for significant weather with snow likely at times in addition to possibly strong winds.”
