A TRIP down memory lane landed a man in trouble with the police.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kyle Waddicar came across the place he used to live as a youngster.

He was reminded of his step-brother who died in 2015 and broke into the empty property where he was sitting in his brother's room drinking a beer when police arrived.

"There is no suggestion he did anything else or was going to do anything else," said Gareth Price, defending.

Waddicar, 33, of Parkinson Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to criminal damage. He was fined £50 with £85 costs and £32 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £300 compensation.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said the property in question was an empty shop which was up for sale.

The broken window was reported to police and when they announced their arrival Waddicar came out.

"He told police he used to live in the house with his step-brother who died in 2015," said Mr Robinson.

"He said he just wanted to sit down in his brother's old room and have a beer."

Gareth Price, defending, said it was a sad case.

"He wasn't making a deliberate pilgrimage, he just happened to find himself outside the property," said Mr Price.

"He broke a window and went in and was sitting, having a beer and reminiscing about happier times. He realises it wasn't his right to damage the window in order to gain entry."
