A 30-year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of rape following allegations a teenage boy was subjected to a serious sexual assault assaulted in the early hours of Christmas Day.

The man, who is from Accrington, was arrested in Westhoughton today and is currently in police custody.

Police had issued a warrant for the man’s arrest on Christmas Day following allegations the boy was raped at a property in Accrington.

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is being supported by specially-trained officers.

At the time of issuing the witness appeal police warned the public not to approach the suspect.

A police spokesman said: “Earlier this week we appealed for help to trace a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault.

“Following enquiries a 30-year-old man, from Accrington, has today been arrested in the Westhoughton area on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody.

“Many thanks to those who assisted with our appeal.”
