A QUAD biker who ‘recklessly’ overtook cars and almost caused a head-on high-speed crash is being hunted by police.

Officers released footage of the ‘extremely dangerous’ incident, which was filmed on a dashboard camera.

The video shows the man overtake at least two cars before narrowly avoiding a collision.

No-one was injured in the incident but police said it could have easily resulted in a serious accident.

PCSO Chris Hamer said: “It happened on Haslingden Road, Rawtenstall near Road End, Haslingden. The quad bike was travelling in the direction of Rawtenstall.

“The manner in which the vehicle was being driven is considered to be dangerous and anti-social.

“This type of behaviour on our roads costs lives.

“It puts innocent people at unnecessary risk. Incidents like these give responsible quad bike riders a bad name.

“The public have been great with the amount of information that has been put forward.

“We work proactively to prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads and I thank the public for their assistance.”

The driver was also criticised on social media for not wearing a helmet. While this is not illegal the DVLA highly recommends one is worn.

Community leaders described the rider’s actions on Monday evening as ‘reckless’ and slammed him for ‘putting other people’s lives at risk’.

Longholme ward councillor Steve Hughes said: “This is completely unacceptable behaviour. It’s idiotic.

“If this guy has a death wish then that is one thing but he was acting incredibly selfishly by putting the lives of others at risk.

“Quad bikes are a great thing but they should be used off-road and not on a public highway.

“They should certainly not be ridden in this irresponsible manner.

“I hope the police find this individual and bring the full force of the law down on him.

“I have received a number of complaints about speeding motorists in Haslingden Road but nothing like this.”

Fellow ward councillor Annie McMahon said: “This kind of behaviour is reckless.

“This person needs to be caught before there is a serious accident.

“I will be contacting the police to see how they plan to deal with it. But I would urge anyone who knows who this individual is to contact the police straight away.”

The video has been viewed more than 12,000 times on social media site Facebook and has attracted comments branding the rider an ‘idiot’.
