THERE is more to the building industry than bricks and mortar – that was the lesson 21 students found out in class this week.
Staff from Pasquill, who supply roofing supplies met design and technology students at Parklands High School, Chorley to help them gain an insight into career opportunities within the building and distribution industry.
Lisa Greenhalgh, branch administrator at the Pasquill Chorley offices came up with the idea to bring the opportunity to students in the area.
She said: "I thought it would be great if we could reach out to the local community by hosting workshops in schools - where Pasquill operates.
"The students had a fantastic time getting involved in the practical side of the session."
Students, aged 14 to 15, built a truss bridge from lollipop sticks during an hour-long practical workshop.
The winning team of the strongest bridge have been invited for a tour of Pasquill’s offices in Wigan Lane, Chorley and get the opportunity to see a roof design manufactured.
Caroline Sawyer, curriculum leader for Product Design, said: "Having this opportunity to link to industry helps us promote the subject of Product Design and enables pupils to see how their learning can benefit them in the world of work and career development.
"A valuable experience our pupils will definitely benefit from.”
