GEORGE Boyd described being named the supporters’ clubs’ player of the year as a “great honour”, because he believes the prize could have gone to any number of his team-mates.

Although the Clarets suffered relegation with two games to spare, the winger feels they have earned plenty of credit in the Premier League and that was reflected by the number of candidates for the top player award.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton and strikers Ashley Barnes and Danny Ings all picked up prizes from individual supporters’ associations, but Boyd won the majority and therefore the overall vote.

The former Hull man said that -relegation aside - he couldn’t have asked for more from his first year at the club “It was lovely, especially from the supporters who come to every game. It’s a great honour,” said Boyd, who scooped five of the 11 player of the year prizes.

“There have been a lot of good performances this season with Heats (Heaton) and Barnesy (Barnes) especially and Tripps (Kieran Trippier) who didn’t get anything.

“There are lots of players who have done well this season.

“I thought I might get the goal but I didn’t realise I’d get that many player of the years because there are so many other players who did well this year.”

Boyd feels he is leaving the Premier League a better player than when he arrived on a joint club record £3million move from Hull in the summer, and he is eyeing a speedy return.

The midfielder added: “We’ve all loved it. We want to get back straight away.”
