A BURNLEY woman hanged herself after ‘a number of significant knocks’ in the last weeks of her life, an inquest heard.
Michelle Chappell, 37, had split up with her partner and lost her job at a factory before her death on April 24, Burnley Coroner’s Court was told yesterday.
Her body was found by her sisters at her home in Moorland Road, when they got back from a weekend in Blackpool.
Victoria Chappell told the inquest her sister was ‘a bit of a rebel’ when she was younger and had ‘got in some bother’ after she started drinking and ‘taking things she shouldn’t have been taking’.
During the late 1990s Michelle was prescribed anti-depressants, the inquest heard, and about 11 years ago she ‘seemed to calm down a bit’ when she got a job in a factory and met her former partner.
When this relationship ended she met someone else, but the new relationship ended just weeks before her death. Victoria said she seemed ‘very down’ at this time and was ‘saying no one cares about her and no one loves her’, despite being told this ‘couldn't be further from the truth’.
Michelle then lost her job and took her life within a fortnight, the court heard.
She left a note in the house that was found by her sisters, and coroner Richard Taylor said she had ‘made her feelings quite clear’.
He added: “May I repeat my sincere condolences to the family in returning a conclusion this afternoon. This was a young lady who had several significant knocks over the week or two before her death.
“She clearly suffered from some depression in recent years and I have no option but a conclusion that she took her own life.”
