A SUPPORT group has celebrated the success of hundreds of women who found a way to make their voices heard.

Aawaz, an Accrington-based support group for Asian women, held an awards ceremony yesterday to mark a scheme which has helped 1,800 women across Hyndburn.

The Women of Achievement event, at Accrington Town Hall, acknowledged the triumphs of women who went to Aawaz for help in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Organisers at Aawaz said the ceremony celebrated the successful project, now in it final year.

Hundreds of women who took part now lead more independent lives after improving their English.

Dignitaries who attended the event also heard how participants are now helping others as volunteers, and as workers in the community.

Chief Officer of Aawaz, Zulekha Dala, said: “It’s been a phenomenal success and we have seen so many women participate.

“The project was all about helping women improve their English, in whichever way they needed, because if you can use English confidently then you can speak for yourself and don’t need to depend on anybody.

“Some people have gone on to get jobs as a result, but really it is about the little things we all take for granted.

“Speaking to teachers at your child’s school, going to the doctors, these things are easy when you are confident in your English, and turn into a nightmare if you are not.

“It is inspiring to see how many women have gone on to help others, not just here, but with other agencies such as Lancashire County Council and at Age Concern.

“They are true role models.”
